Riviera Maya
Riviera Maya, more than a catch phrase for a tourist destination and an incredible place to vacation live or play. The Riviera Maya or Mayan Riviera is a designated zone to the south of the Tourist Destination Cancun which today resembles Miamis Southbeach with her booming 5 Star Luxury Hotels and towering beachfront condos dotting what today has become a 100 yard wide 20 kilometer long stretch of man made real estate.
The Riviera Maya is a great contrast to Cancun's created tourist destination who recently celebrated 35 years of existence with its warm and friendly feeling and not over developed existence along stretches of pristine beaches stretching from the small somewhat still sleepy fishing village of Puerto Morelos to Tulums south border with the Costa Maya.
Mexicos Riviera Maya encompasses Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum as well as all of the smaller areas along the way. After all it would be negligent to not mention places like Playa Maroma, Xcalacoco, Paamul, Akumal, Soliman Bay and of course the Biosphere Reserve Sian Kaan.
|
Unlike Cancun, The Riviera Maya doesn't have large high rise condo complexes on the beach or high density construction, on the contrary the Riviera Maya is filled with a wide variety of hotels from simple Hostels in Playa Del Carmen to Luxury World renowned hotels like Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Mandarin. But what makes Mexicos Riviera Maya special are her quaint hotels or some people call them "Boutique Hotels" like Hotel Itzaes, Le Reve, or Posada Mariposa.
Just like any of the other tourism destinations in Mexico, The Riviera Maya offers visitors an incredible variety of activities, restaurants, night clubs and beautiful white sand beaches. You can engage in activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, exploring Mayan Ruins like Tulum or Cóba, Sailing, Kiteboarding, ATV Tours, Swimming with Dolphins, Zip Lines and other jungle activities, refresh yourself snorkeling in one of the many fresh water cenotes (sacred wells), visit or incredible natural park Xel Ha, parasailing, the list of Riviera Maya Activities seems endless, or of course you can do nothing at all.

Most Hotels in the Riviera Maya are 4 floors. |

Puerto Morelos, still a sleepy fishing village just 20 minutes south of Cancun's International Airport. Hotels stretch from the north of town south to the borders with Playa Del Carmen but the main part of town remains basically small quaint hotels and private homes and condos. Small restaurants and stores still dominate the town and fishing, scuba diving and kiteboarding remain the primary local activities. |
